The Cove
Tucked into a mature beech forest at the base of the mountains, The Cove is a compact studio that feels unexpectedly generous. Nestled into the landscape and carefully arranged around existing trees, it frames intimate views of the surrounding bush and Lake Wakatipu beyond.
At just 36 sqm, with a lofted sleeping area, the home opens upwards with soaring ceilings and tall cedar-and-glass entry doors, allowing light and air to flow through the space. Dark walnut ply grounds the interior, while the double-height living area remains airy and open, enhancing the sense of space despite the building’s modest footprint.
Designed with simplicity and care, the flexible layout and integrated kitchen allow the studio to adapt to the needs of its owners, while materials and finishes connect the interior to the tones and textures of the surrounding forest.
The Cove shows how contemporary, open-plan living can be achieved lightly, respectfully, and in harmony with its natural setting — a small home that belongs fully to its place.
